Fume Tests

Hello,
Here are some fumetests I worked on for some in game renders. Their intent is to be used for games meant to have a tight framing, so less about film and more about games. I've got a couple things going on but I want to try to post an in game use in the next couple months.

Here they are:

Going to pull the normals and z-depth off of them and see what I can yield with all of that in UDK. Until next time.

VFX Training Video: Light Spell

Hello! I've been missing for a little while and this is what I've been doing. I've made a training video with ImbueFX of the light spell that I've been working on with my blog. It covers a shaders, particles, meshes, flares, dynamic lights, kismet and matinee... and a little level design... Its meant for intermediate users of UDK. Take a look at it here

Magic Show Update: Light Spell Timing

Hello,
I've finally started working on the effects part of Magic show. I started with the light spell that you see in the video below. This is the basic timing of the individual tag. I'll be making another sequence where the whole room lights up soon. The reason I went with a magic light was to establish the tone of the world. I also wanted to make a light spell that was anchored to the space with the paper tags glued to the I-beams. The space is abandoned and has no power, so it uses magic lights. I was attempting to be subtle with the flaring, since they tend to get a little overblown very quickly.

The below was created in Unreal using most of their VFX systems, including Cascade, their flare system, Kismet, Matinee, and some of their post settings.

I wanted to start with this since its a bit simpler than the ice spell parts. I also may have a couple more plans for this, so I'll announce that when its more official.

Update: I've added a couple more elements to the Light Spell. Here's an updated video. Mainly the rings and some tweaks to the timing.

A Couple Character Sketches

I asked a friend of mine to work up the model since I want to get back into making the VFX for this. I've been having a hard time letting go of the character concept, so I did 2 more sketches. Ok that's it! I'm done making sketches for this until I post the plasma light and the ice stuff.. There. I said it.

Haha. Here they are.

VFX Training Videos with ImbueFX

Hello all,
I'm pleased to announce that I've started making videos with imbueFX. The first is a basic (and free) video on how to add lights to a particle system using Kismet and Matinee in UDK. Take a look see! More to come!

Character changes

Hello all,
I wanted to change the proportions of the character before I got to the model. I haven't had a chance to get to the modeling because of my day job (sigh) so after not looking at it for a while, I decided to change up the uniform a little and the proportions to make it feel more comic book styled. Here it is. Barring any work related issues I should have a model up soon.

Or an ice shader... One or the other.

Blue Block and an Environment Update

Hello,
Here's an update on the environment. I blue blocked the area then started working on base colors and meshes. The meshes are all base colors, so this is just stubbing in the models before really getting down into some zbrush high polys and texture stuff. Here they are:

Blue block

Just the beginning
Next will be caps for the edges and then some high poly pops. I'm no where near done with the props. I have a lot to still do. To switch it up, I may switch to the ice bolt and ice wall meshes and shader/materials so I don't get prop obsessed. Lighting is also no where near done. Ok I got to get the caps done, as soon as I get the props closer to painted, I'll post them in groups. Mmmmmyep! Having a blast working on this!

Update 2/17/13: Here's an initial grunge pass on the environment, need to make more props and yes the ICE.

Start to the grunge, need to make a lot of posters...
Update: 3/31/2013: Here are some posters and tags. Need to make more posters for the wall pieces.

Ibeam tags, signs and posters. Next more posters, a door dammit and ice!

Until next time!
